First of all, I extend my sincerest apologies for notblogging for the past month. This year of 2012 has been one of major transitionand change for me. I have no idea where this energy is taking me. And I have noidea where my art is landing or how it is changing. The only thing certainright now is that everything is changing on most every level.

A friend just told me on the phone that he believes the 2012and beyond energy seems to be all about learning how to make adjustmentsquicker and more gracefully. This means having the emotional meltdowns thatsometimes accompany change and moving on in a swifter fashion than before. Alsoholding onto the idea that things just might be better on the other side of thechange. This has been true for me so far.

Do you find 2012 taking you through unexpected or maybeexpected changes? Is your life changing drastically and quickly? Post yourcomment. I’m thinking that talking about it will help ease the transition.

Flash Fill Photography

Recently I learned about flash fill photography in my Photography II class at the university. This is an easy technique to grasp and promises to delight most photographers of any level who try it. The results can look magical. The flash crystalizes focus on the object of the flash. The rest of the composition goes out of focus and gets treated to some unusual effects.

Our class took a field trip to try this technique out. We headed out to Fort Bayard in Bayard, New Mexico, 20 minutes from campus just before dusk. We ran around the grounds of Fort Bayard flashing anything and everything in total excitement of seeing the outcome. Most of us were thrilled with what the process delivered. I certainly was.

I became enthralled with one particular place on the grounds and took many photos from that location. See "Tapestry" and "Blue Railing".

I recently did some flash fill shooting while walking my cat, Sir Kitty, in the neighborhood. Soon, I had a squad of young boys flashing the neighborhood with their point and shoot cameras. It was quite fun.

Last week I explained Stages One and Two of my creative process: Coffee Pot Theory of the Creative Process. Today we will finish up with the remaining three stages. I have used the word “idea” throughout but you might also consider interchanging it with “project” because I think that the process is the same for any creative endeavor. No matter if you are an artist, writer, musician, businessperson, layperson, or another kind of person (;-0), this process applies.

3^rd Stage: Revival

If the idea has managed to survive to this point that means that you have a newfound hope for the probability of your idea. You revive it and ask, “How can I make it happen?” You might research other ideas that are similar or ask others for advice. You might also enlist the help of an expert in the field of your idea. You begin to grapple with how to bring it forth. Possibilities exist.

4^th Stage: Shaping

Now that you have given your idea a reason for living, you move into action by organizing your thoughts. “Okay, I think it’ll work” is what you say now. You plan your strategy and feel confident that it can be done.

5^th Stage: Yippee!

You have given shape and form to your idea, and it is now a livable and breathable thing. “What a great idea!” you declare. You have moved through all the stages of moaning, groaning, crying, and laughing. Now it is time to celebrate because the idea has been made manifest into the real world.

Summary:

Although a coffee lover, I realize that I feel the same buzz from creating something new as I feel from drinking my coffee.

Last week I introduced you to my Coffee Pot Theory of the Creative Process. This is a process that came to me in 2004. I called it a theory because it was something that I was thinking about as a possibility in outlining the creative process. Creativity is a rascal that does not want to be tied down. It is a free spirit. But, what if we can get a handle on the process of creativity? Wouldn’t that make life a little easier? Wouldn’t it help us create if we knew the process?

This theory was published in 2004 in the ARTistic FX magazine in Hartford, Connecticut. The magazine is no longer online, otherwise I would give you the link. I will reproduce it here on this blog for you over several weeks so you can take it in, or drink it in!

“DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR NEXT CUP OF COFFEE HOLDS THE SECRET TO THE CREATIVE PROCESS?

We are the Coffee Generation, judging by the many different coffee establishments. Why do we love our coffee so much? Does the idea of drinking a cup of coffee conjure up the scene in your mind of being jolted from your sleepy-headed state and revving your feet into action? It certainly does for me.

Let’s think about the act of drinking that cup of coffee as metaphor for the creative process. Think of the head as the beginning of the process and the feet as a completion of our process. Coffee wakes our head so our feet can get moving.

Now, let’s compare Coffee with Ideas. Ideas come into our minds so our feet can bring them out into the world in some form. We begin with an idea and find ourselves immersed in a process of making it happen.” [This is much like placing the coffee grounds and water into the pot and then letting the process take over to make that cup of coffee].

“Let’s begin with the old-fashioned method: the percolator coffee pot. How does it make coffee? The percolator takes its time heating the water and then takes more time sending the water upward only to come back down over the coffee grounds. Then, the water seeps over the grounds, and the fresh aroma of coffee fills the kitchen as the coffee makes its way into the pot with a final brew. [Let’s compare this process with the creative process].

1^st Stage: Yahoo!

This is the moment in time when an idea arrives in your wondering mind, ‘Hmm… I have an idea,' you might say to yourself. This is the very exciting stage when you salivate at the very prospect of pursuing this idea. It’s like the first kiss, so savory delicious you can hardly contain your jazzed-up emotion over it.

2^nd Stage: Ouch!

Your idea takes a nosedive after running it through your Reality Checking System. ‘It’ll never work. What was I thinking anyway?” is what you might be saying at this stage. You ramble on, “There are no new ideas, anyway.” You doubt everything about yourself and this idea: its feasibility, your skill level, your thinking abilities, blah, blah, blah, etc. Your acrimonious remarks continue. Pragmatism rules. The Critic takes over.”

Coffee Pot Theory of the Creative Process.

Part One: Introduction

Years ago I thought about the creative process quite a bit. As a result my intuition played along and gifted me with many ideas. The creative process was revealed to me in several ways.

One of these was a process that I developed (along with the Muse) which called itself “Coffee Pot Theory of the Creative Process”. After I wrote it up and talked about it in one of my creativity workshops I realized that the idea of the coffee pot was a dated one. Some of the younger people in the audience did not know what a percolator-type coffee pot was. Ouch. Did I feel old at that point? Oh yeah!

But anyway, I think the idea is still relevant. So if you do not know what a percolator-type coffee pot is, look at my illustration. That’s what it looks like. Sometimes they are electric. The simplest ones are heated on the stove. The water comes up from the bottom through a tube and falls onto the coffee grounds. See the links at the bottom of this article for more information.

Learning From Art History: Pop Art and Minimal Art

Basically the lesson from Art History of the Pop Artists and the Minimal Artists boils down to the fact that it is the artist’s intention that makes an object a work of art. The idea behind the intention is what matters. The object has no meaning in the art process, it is just a means to an end, and a statement that it is art because the artist says it is.

The context in which the object appears is also important. Is the object located in a place where objects are seen as art? Duchamp’s urinal and bottle rack are simply objects, ready-mades that he deemed as art objects. He placed them in the context of an art gallery, therefore, and voila, art object! With “Bottle Rack” he then took this idea full circle by taking the common object, bottle rack, back to its original location where it then ceased to be an art object. With Minimal artist, Dan Flavin, his fluorescent light pieces carry this idea out also. Once the lights are unplugged on his Light Art Objects, they cease to be art objects. The object can vacillate between being an art object and just the plain common object.

The other thing that the minimal artists were getting at was that the object was to be simply the object itself and not be an aesthetic or meaningful presentation. It was to give to the viewer an experience of simply being present with the object, much like meditation as Matthew, my art history professor, says. Musicians were in on this scene as well. I really like the pop music artist, John Cage’s piece “4:22”. I’m not sure how I would have reacted during the concert. But, the idea behind it was quite interesting, that the sound of the audience was the music. This is akin to the idea of the minimal artist who wants the viewer to be the experience with the object. It’s like the person witnessing the “thing” becomes part of the piece. This is pretty cool, really. It takes on the meaning of being interactive art.

Andy Warhol was pop art personified. I have seen numerous documentaries on him. Every time I see him he plays the shallow role, like there is nothing, absolutely nothing behind those eyes and nothing in his brain, like a ghost. Chilling, actually, now that I think about it. But this is what his art was showing us, the shallowness of the time and that we too wrapped up in the wrappings like packaging and celebrity. So this makes perfect sense. He was his art. He was his message. And he played it to perfection.

I appreciate Carl Andre’s pieces. They remind me of a past experience when I went to a gallery in New York City, most likely the Whitney. One installation piece was just a room piled with dirt. At that time, I thought, “It is just a pile of dirt”. And it was! Now I know that was the point. I guess I got it back then when I didn’t think I did. Ha!

One of my favorite art and artist of this time period, late 1950s and early 1960s, is the Light Art of Dan Flavin. I know I am not supposed to have an aesthetic experience with his light fixtures, but I do. I think they are just the most elegant beautiful art objects. They glow with simplicity. One of his pieces especially gets my attention. It is the multicolored grid of lights. I also like the fact that this can be turned on and off as an art object which is the statement of the minimalists.

I'm reading Steve Job's sister's eulogy right now. It's beautiful. Here is something she said that I liked, kind of art-related,

"His philosophy of aesthetics reminds me of a quote that went something like this: “Fashion is what seems beautiful now but looks ugly later; art can be ugly at first but it becomes beautiful later.”"

A Double Ooops and What's New

A double oops for not getting my last two posts out on time. I promised to deliver every Monday by noon. The past two weeks I certainly slipped up. I am very sorry for letting you down.

I would like to catch you up this week with what is going on and where I see new things happening.

As some of you know I'm going to art school full time. The past two weeks I had mid-term exams and was studying pretty much every waking (sometimes sleeping while at it) moment. So my schedule has been a little off these past two weeks. I'll try real hard to get back on track for next Monday. Is Monday a good time for you to read my posts? Is there another day that would be better for you?

You may have noticed that I am playing around with video. This has been a lot of fun and very exciting new development for me. Many people have been doing this for a while now. I'm a late bloomer, what can I say? Expect to see more videos.

I'm in my 2nd semester of photography. The photo in this post is from my latest project. It is one photograph from a series of four. I'm very tickled with the result and see more photography in my future.

Writing and thinking about creativity just gives me a thrill. So, please converse with me on this subject and expect to see more writing from me about it.

And, oh yeah, you may have noticed my name on the caption of the above photo. I want to matriculate back to my maiden name or at least use it somehow. Rush is my maiden name. Gravelle is my ex-husband's name. So, for now, I would like to go by Mary Rush Gravelle.

Finally, I'm trying the new viewing of this blog. Do you like it? Should I revert back to the old view?

Learning From Art History: The Beginning of Self-Expression as an Artist

Art is not separate from our lives. We can learn a lot fromwhat has gone before us. As artists it is important that we learn from arthistory. We owe a lot to the artists that went before us.

Throughout historyartists have been creating, painting, sculpting, drawing, etc. But, it was notuntil the 1800s when artists really came into their own right. That is to say,it was when the art patron ceased to give commissions that the artist foundtheir own voice and means of expression. Of course, this has caused economichardship for the artist as well.

It was in France when this shift began. The beginningof this shift happened with the philosophical writings of John Locke in 1690.He wrote "Concerning Human Understanding" and believed that ideaswere innately our own. Ideas were personal property. Along with this idea camethe thinking that property and wealth was something that should be shared witheveryone. This was a radical thought. At the time it was believed that ideascame from God and that property ownership came through bloodlines. In 1762,Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote "Social Contract" outlining the “GeneralWill” of the people with ideas on democracy. These writings of Locke in 1690and Rousseau in 1762 along with revolutions along the way, helped free mankindfrom the monarchy and the rule of aristocracy.

The art during these times were neo-classism and rococoand a third style which straddled both of these. Napoleon declared Neo-classismthe official style of the revolution. It was photographical realism in style and showed heroismand stability as the main theme. Whereas, Rococo art was the art of the aristocracy.Artists were commissioned to paint lovely and delightful scenes. Rococo art wasan art of denial of the times. It depicted romantic and fantasy ideals. Whenthe aristocracy fell, the artist lost their job. This began the artistic questfor self-expression.

Destruction: The Sledgehammer that Cracks Opens Your Creative Process

Thispast weekend I fired a large Raku piece -- glazed it on Friday, fired it onSaturday, and cleaned it up on Sunday.

I had built the 22 x 24-inch piece a year ago during my Rakuclass. I had measured it from side to side and top to bottom to insure it wouldfit into the Raku kiln. I failed to consider the diagonal measurement, however.My piece did not fit lying down in the kiln, so I had to stand it up. I firedthe kiln slowly warming it to prevent breaking and cracking. But maybe the firewas too hot in the center of the piece due to it standing up because that iswhere the flame enters the kiln. I really do not know. I’ll talk it over withmy clay professor, Curtis Dinwiddie, tomorrow during class. Hopefully, he willbe able to shed some light on the cause of breakage and cracking.

With the destruction of this piece, my mind has opened tosee new possibilities in this process. As for this particular piece, my friendstell me to go ahead and hang it as is and call it art. I think that the smallpiece on the right could hang by itself. That makes me think along the lines ofdiptychs and triptychs; making artworks from a collection of smaller pieces. Ormaybe just make smaller pieces. Also, I wonder how I could achieve this look inthe cone 10-kiln without having to fire it in the Raku kiln. My mind andimagination are lit up now as a result of the destructive turn of this art piece.

I have always thought of destruction as an integral part ofthe creative process. With this experience, I have a newfound respect for it. Iwrote and published a paper on this subject in 1999. Here is an excerpt:

“Destruction or death is a natural part of life and thecreation process. We cannot keep everything as is. Life moves on with orwithout us…. Sometimes we need to break our mold, break our patterns before wecan move onto new ways of thinking. I like to call it shattered thinking. Thinkof a stained glass piece of art. It is made up of shattered glass pieces.Sometimes they are meticulously cut into pre-designed pieces. This is all partof the creation process. We can plan the pieces from a whole…the glasscuttermight start out with a new sheet of colored glass, [then breaks] it down intoseveral pieces. [Sometimes] we destroy our original creation in order to createsomething new. Color your World Red

I attended a clay workshop over the weekend on how to achieve the color red in the glazing and firing process using copper reds. Our workshop leader was Michael Nowack of Tucson, Arizona.

Apparently there is an art to achieving the color red in the world of potters and ceramicists. I’m so new to this field that I had no a clue about this. I was curious to find out more.

Michael shared his technique and his glaze formulas with us that also included beautiful matte colors of black, green, and blue. He also shared how he achieves his personal color of red by layering two different reds. His first glaze layer is a tomato red. Then on top of that glaze he uses a thin coat of a blue red. The combination of these two reds provides a luscious red color that is unique to Michael’s pottery. However, even for Michael, the achievement of these reds is difficult and does not always come out as expected. There are so many variables even when he uses his tried and true method of layering these reds. So when they do come out, it is exciting.

Attendees at the workshop were privileged to use his glazes.Our pots will come out of the kiln right about now (10:00 am mst). I cannotwait to see how my pots came out.

As an artist who loves color, I have myown favorite colors and red is one of them. To me, red is passion and warmth.Many of my landscape paintings use red. Being a painter I use color perhaps alittle differently than a potter, but not really. I mix and layer my colors toachieve the desired color just as Michael layers his reds.

New Camera Puts the Focus Where You Want It

There's a new camera coming out later this year from Lytro. The new technology allows the photographer to worry about the focus later in the studio. What does this mean for the fine art photographer? What does this mean for the visual artist who paints from photographs?

Fun for both, I would say. For the photographer, it means shooting for the fun of it and creatively focusing the shot later in the studio. Knowing good composition and framing are still key. So, this will not change what to shoot in a photograph. It will change how to shoot a photograph, taking the emphasis off of focus.

For the artist using photographs, this brings many options available to them. I'm thinking series of paintings using focus as the main theme. I suppose the photographer could also make a series of photographs out of one photo using different focus / focal points.

I came across this Video on Moving to Visual Art yesterdayand I thought "how cool!” so I thought I would share it with you. Painter,Andrew Purchin, and collage artist, Lisa Hochstein, teamed up in a “day-longartist residency at MAH on Sept 3rd from 11:00AM - 5:00 PM” where they hoped tocreate a community of dancers to move to their works.[1] Andrew says in hisartist statement that his work is about “carving the space” with hispaintbrush.[2]He integrates his dance improvisation experience with his painting-in-the-momentexperience to provide what he hopes is a moving experience for the viewer.

During my Wisdom Paintingsessions, I ask participants to move to their paintings. But, these paintingsare purely personal and painted for the spiritual purpose of self-discovery. Whatabout fine art paintings? In the video mentioned in the first paragraph, peopleare asked to move to fine art paintings and collages in a gallery setting. Howvery refreshing! People are actually asked to respond to the paintings. What aconcept.

With much the same message as the above video, another articleI found talks about an exhibit called “MOVE: CHOREOGRAPHING YOU, ART AND DANCESINCE THE 1960S". During the exhibit, visitors are choreographed invitingthem to partake in a more physical experience of the art.[3]

And what about this video: “Art of Moving?”The fluid and sometimes-funky movements of the dancers invoke an abstractpainting where the artist utilizes fluid and free brushstrokes. And in another videofrom Mirabai Ceiba, we see a woman who is moving her body on the landscape toher own song. I class this video along with visual art because the images arebeautiful and are fine art themselves. This video is a spiritual and visualtreat that any artist could get inspired by. These two videos turn it around onthe artist to become inspired by movement in creating their art.

Which is exactly what Hans Moore is doing in his YouTube video. He sets hiscomputer generated art images in motion while a song plays in the background. Ifound it mesmerizing. At the same time, it was inspiring thought in me of howto integrate movement into my own visual art.[4]

So, the question for you, the dear reader of my blog, is howdo you want to move the viewer with your art? Do you want to move thememotionally, intellectually, spiritually, or physically, or any combination ofthese? How would you need to change your art to meet your desire? Three Techniques for Creating Meaningful Art

Are you creating art that is meaningful to you? Or has your art making become dry, cold, and lifeless?

By meaningful, do we mean to the artist or to the viewer? Creating meaningful art, to me, means that I create art that is meaningful to me. I can only hope, that by creating art that is personally gratifying this will in turn be meaningful to someone else.

So, how does an artist go about creating meaningful art? I think that if the artist finds a heartfelt connection to something and creates from that perspective, this will indeed create a work of art that is meaningful to the creator. If a work of art is created from the heart, love energy will be implicit in the final creation. In turn someone looking at the work of art will feel this love energy.

As an artist, how do you find subject matter that is meaningful? Is the subject matter really important? Or do you create from feelings? Maybe the art materials used are themselves inspiring and meaningful to you.

Here are three techniques that will serve as beginning inspiration and fodder to instill meaning into your next work of art.

1. Observation

Get out of the studio and into the world. Go for a drive to a new place. Or simply take a walk anywhere. Movement is key. By moving, your eye is awakened and exercised to seeing new sights. Observe everything around you. What do you see that excites you? What are you feeling as you encounter this place? What colors and shapes do you see that are thrilling for you? Does nature bring you a sense of awe and wonder? Does the urban landscape arouse your curiosity? Could you extract any of these observations to be used in your next work of art?

2. Journaling

Journaling is an important way to capture your thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Vow to write everyday on what’s happening in your life and what is transpiring over time. This will give you insights into your own life creating material for what is meaningful to you. Use your journal in conjunction with the observation exercise above. There must be something that is happening in your life right now that you could use in some way to create your next meaningful piece of art.

3. Sketchbook

Many artists consider the sketchbook one of the most integral aspects to the creation of their art. Some use it as others use their journal, except they draw what they observe instead of writing about it. I suggest that you do both. Draw what you observe. Then write about your observations noting shapes, colors, content, smell, feelings, and anything else you deem worthy of capturing. Find out if there is something here that can be used in your next creation, if only a small part of it, that could create more meaning to your art.

Wall Artists Need Walls

This might sound like a strange idea but it is one that has come across my radar screen recently.

A friend told me that she never wants to pay rent or make house payments again. She wants to live in a tent or a yurt. Another friend told me he never wants to own anything again, especially a house and property. And then a married couple told me that they had no wall space left to hang art. I guess I have been taking walls for granted. I never really thought about the implications of my art making requiring wall space. But it does. I’m a painter and my art hangs on a wall. That makes me a wall artist. Most wall artists are referred to as muralists who actually paint on a wall. For purposes of this article, I refer to anyone who makes art that hangs on a wall.

So, this has me wondering about my career as an artist. If people don’t have walls, where will my art hang? I could begin doing sculpture that stands alone. I could create environmental art like Andy Goldsmith. I could do sand painting that disappears with the wind or rain. I could do performance art. I could make any other kind of art that does not require wall space. But I love to paint.

Then this past week a magical thing happened on my way to my favorite hiking trail. I decided to take a different driving route. Instead of taking my normal left hand turn, I kept driving down the road all the way to the end. Much to my amazement it went up the mountain where a beautiful housing development of sorts had been created. Obviously these were people with enough money to build such beautiful homes on beautiful land with amazing views. Well, I’ll tell you, these people have walls and are most likely proud of those walls. So now my challenge is how to get my art up on those walls. I think walls will be around for a while. So my worries are over.

If you are in the second category, you are painfully aware of the inhibiting factor to your art making capabilities and success.

I recently re-organized my studio after being in this house for almost two years. It is so refreshing to be able to walk right up to my painting and paint. I no longer have to clean off the table or move things out of my way.

Essence Painting in Process

First of all, for those who have been reading my blog, you most likely see that I changed the look. I hope you like the change. Let me know.

In January I received a spirit message to create Essence of You paintings. This idea backfired on me at that time.

I have decided to paint the Essence of Me and discover the process for painting the Essence of You (i.e. someone else).

I'm using my birth name in the title of this painting since I believe that my true essence has not changed. I was most likely born with it. And you were born with your true essence intact too.

The Being on upper right of the painting is from an Igniting drawing I did 9/20/06. When I was figuring out what my essence might look like, she popped into my head that she is my essence.

That is all I would like to say at this time about my essence. I would like to hear your comments and ideas on the idea of Essence paintings. Do you think you would consider commissioning me to do an Essence of YOU painting for you with your input? Or would you prefer to hire me as a Painting Guide to help you paint your own Essence painting?

Recently I began painting again after almost nine months off. To my amazement, the Muse is still with me!

My dreams during the last two nights were about painting. In the first dream, I was the artist doing very cool paintings hanging out with very cool people (of course! ;-)). In last night's dream, I was asked to look over a stack of paintings by a retired painting professor who was preparing for his retrospective.

My excuse for not painting is that I have been in art school. It never felt like I had time to paint for myself given the myriad of school projects to complete. I managed to paint one painting for myself last year. That was Sir Kitty at Home, a 36 x 60 inch acrylic painting on canvas.

So, my inspiring message to you dear artist is that the Muse is waiting. She is waiting for you to show up to your process. She is never the one that forsakes us. No, we ignore her effectively shutting her out. How can we listen and hear her prodding when we don’t show up to our creative process?

My inspiring message to the art collectors out there is to keep doing your job of appreciating the artist's work. If you have a favorite artist that seems to be stuck, prod them to just show up. If you know an artist that does show up, pat them on the back and tell them to keep showing up.

How Do You Give an Art Critique?

Is it appropriate to give an artist a critique on their work when they have not asked for it? If an artist asks you to critique their work, how do you go about critiquing it? Do you give negative feedback? Should you always give positive feedback?

In my opinion, if an artist has not asked you to critique the work, then don't. There may be reasons why the artist has not asked. Maybe they have not reached the point where they feel strong enough in their artistic pursuit to take a critique. Maybe they are still experimenting with their artistic style and they may feel squashed creatively to hear a critique of their work. Or, conversely, the artist may have reached a point where they feel strong enough in their personal artistic expression that they might not feel a need for a critique.

However with all of that said, I have given unsolicited feedback in certain cases. I try not to be negative but constructive. I only give unsolicited feedback to a beginning or emerging artist whom I judge to have that "certain something" like talent or intent where I think my comment/feedback would be helpful to their artwork.

The feedback, whether solicited or not, that will be helpful to the artist comes from an art making standpoint (formal art elements) such as, "By using blue or purple instead of black in the shadow areas, a new life-force and vitality would come forth in the work." For unsolicited feedback, preface the comment with something like, "I know you did not ask for feedback so take whatever I say with a grain of salt…."

There are positive and negative ways to go about giving critiques. Whatever you do, stay away from negativity as that can have the effect of shutting down the creative spirit very quickly. Talk about the work of art and do not attack or judge the artist. Use what I said earlier about giving feedback in terms of formal art elements. This will help to depersonalize the critique.

The artist is always in control of how to use the feedback from the critique. The artist might decide that what has been said feels right and true for their art, or not. The bottom line lies with the artist and their particular work. Only the artist knows what they are trying to accomplish with their particular form of art.

I think if an artist is serious about improving their artwork, they will appreciate, welcome, and solicit critiques. Any artist who has been to art school knows that their art gets better through critiques. Always give positive and constructive comments if asked for feedback on the art.

When I began to paint my first landscape paintings, I sought out the critique from a local art professor. I cannot tell you how helpful this was. At times it felt mighty uncomfortable as well. Somehow, he maintained a position of balancing comments on my talent as an artist with the needed criticism of how I was going about my painting. We remain friends to this day and talk fondly of those times when I asked for his feedback and took it in, or not. My art has benefitted from positive and constructive feedback.

Who are you as an artist?

This past weekend a friend called my reputation as being an artist into question. He told me that I am not up to his level as an artist. He informed me that I could never get into a high-end gallery like he has. Egotistical nastiness and comparison was in his voice. He continued to tell me that if I could not see that, then I had a problem.

Okaaaay…….. and Ouch!

So now I am questioning who I am as an artist. Why am I going to art school? What do I expect to achieve through my art and with my art? How far do I really want my art to go? What kind of deep commitment level am I really ready to give to my art?

Do I want to see my art in a museum? Do I want my art to be represented in Santa Fe, New York, Los Angeles, or any other hothouse of art activity?

Or do I just want to paint and not worry whether it sells or not? Is it important to convey some sort of meaning or message through my art? Am I doing art for my own sake and sanity? Does anyone else even care if I do my art?

In a way this is beneficial to where I am right now. It is always good to question who we are and what we are doing and why.

How about you? Who are you as an artist? Where do you want your art to take you? Where do you want to take your art? Do you want to be famous locally, at the state level, national or international level? Do you want to sell your art or just create it?

Is Creativity Learned?

Is creativity something you can call forth? Do you need to believe that you are creative to be creative? Is everyone creative or is it something that you are born with?

I believe that the creative spark can hit when we are receptive in some way. I seem to be most creative when I am full of wonder and curiosity. The questions that arise from this state seem to invite the bubbling forth of ideas. That seems to really get the creative process rolling.

When I begin a new painting or painting series, this is what happens. First, I begin noticing my current interests and intrigues. That leads me to curiosity and wonder about those subjects. I begin researching which leads to more questions. The process can be quite lengthy at times until the questions subside. Then there is an incubation period where all of this research and the answers coalesce. This is a space of the unknown or gestation. I just let ideas percolate and come to the surface. Then, these new ideas run through my filter of what I know about these subjects. The juxtaposition of what I know and what I just learned churn the creative process and bring forth something new.

A New Movie: OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art in the Streets

A friend of mine just shared the link to a new movie trailer, Outside In. I have watched many movies on Netflix about street art, graffiti, bombing, etc. It is fascinating and full of emotional mind benders for me personally. I hate it. I love it. I'm appalled at some of the attitudes of these artists. I applaud the attitude of some of these artists. As far as museums bringing it in …. now there is a huge question of motivation on that. Are they really celebrating the art and the artists? Or are they simply capitalizing on another layer in the art scene that has not been tapped?

One of my favorite trees on a local hiking trail. I feel compelled lately to photograph her from every angle.

She guards the turquoise benches for anyone whom might need to rest on their journey. She offers a respite from the busy life that most of us think we have. Our rushed attempts at living a full life are laughed at by her. She remains still and enjoys her life, perhaps more than we do.

I love this Goddess tree and feel so grateful that I get to visit her whenever I want. I hope that this digitally enhanced image of her does her justice. I pray for her safety. Amen. So it is. It is written this day of April 20, 2011. She lives.

Maybe I Will Get my Book Written Now that I Have a Design Started

I began writing a book of my six-week workshop, Igniting Your Intentions™in 2005. My my, how time flies.

Now that I am in graphic design class, one of our assignments is to design a book cover. This gives me the perfect opportunity to begin again.

The image on the left is my first go at designing the book jacket cover. The book itself will be another design project.

What is the social function of art? Part One.

‎"In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay and, unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable and help to change it." -- Ernst Fischer

My friend, Jean Eisenhower, posted the above quote on her Facebook wall.

Do you agree or disagree with what Fischer is saying here? I disagree. Below, I will begin an attempt to support that stance. I would love to hear what you think about the above quote.

My opinion is that the social function of art is to uplift, enlighten, and inspire. I hope that my art is able to do that for others. I want to create beauty so that the viewer will be reminded of the beauty that is all around them, if only for one fleeting moment. A sight of beauty can touch one so deeply and penetrate through layers of discord. A glimpse of beauty can heal our aching and longing for a better world. And hopefully, inspire action to create a better world.

I recently watched the movie, Local Color, about the director's encounter with Russian painter, Nikolai Seroff. Seroff's strong opinion throughout the movie validated my own experience of thinking about art. He also thought that art's purpose was to uplift mankind. In the movie, we get to see another opposing opinion through many heated discussions between a friend of Seroff's and himself. The director is an 18 year old at the time of his encounter with Seroff so most of what Seroff was philosophizing about was a little over his head at the time. I think every artist should see this movie. It is thought provoking and teaches some of Seroff's painting techniques. Most of the discussions were about the differing opinions of the value of representational art vs. abstract expressionistic art. Whether an artist paints representational or abstractly does not matter to me. I think what one can gather from the movie is more about the heart of art and what the artist is trying to convey with his art. Herbie Hancock: Possibilities

I just watched this movie. Wow, how inspiring. Herbie Hancock is the guru of creativity and human spirit ambassador. This is a must see for all creatives. So, I wonder how a visual artist can find collaboration like musicians do? Herbie seeks out talent of all kinds and works with them. They all grow from the experience. He treasures creativity in the moment. I loved what he said in Japan that he used to think he was a musician, now he thinks he is a human being serving humankind through his music. Just the best inspiration! Let me know your thoughts.

Signing Your Art Matters

In preparation to signing the completed painting, Sir Kitty at Home, I did some research on signing my painting. I usually sign it with my symbol and my first name in the lower right hand corner. Last year, I stopped putting the date on my paintings. Here are some good articles I came across:

I'm still painting .... I am happier than I was the last time I posted about this painting. I'm still not happy that I painted Sir Kitty over with Black. The painting was almost finished. Painting him black threw the entire color scheme off. So, now I'm busy recreating the color scheme. Or should I try to paint him blue again?

Sir Kitty Painting -- Still in Process

I just restarted this painting again yesterday. This is why I like to finish paintings in the time period when I begin them. My energy and painting style changes over time.

I have been through six months of life experience, painting other paintings, and looking at other people's art. This changes the energetics of painting.

I'm not sure if I have killed this painting at this point (top photo).

As you can see I have toned down the foreground color. I repainted the two mountains on the left and toned down the orange mountain in the mid-ground on the left. And I painted Sir Kitty over with black, since he is a black cat. I took the path away underneath Sir Kitty in favor of making the entire foreground his playground.

From looking at these two paintings on the screen now, it appears that the current version of this painting places the emphasis on Sir Kitty and kind of holds the eye there. I think I should paint the path back in.

I will keep painting and hopefully resolve this painting without totally changing its dynamics, which I most likely have already done.

Digital
The digital images have been created on the computer with design software of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Corel Painter II. The images at the show are fine art giclee prints that will last a lifetime and more.

Mixed-media
These paintings have been created from found objects, acrylic paint, and acrylic mediums. They have been painted on a foundation of wood and depict a sense of place.

Printmaking
The prints in this show are collagraph prints. I made the printing plates by glueing on various objects such as lace, cut-out cardboard shapes, washers, etc. Then, I coated the plate with gesso. The plate was then inked and a piece of fine quality print paper placed on top and sent through the printing press.

Most of the pieces (all the digital images) can be ordered as fine art giclee prints from my online store. The giclee prints here are of superb quality. I especially love the gallery-wrapped canvas. They come wrapped around 1.5" stretcher bars and are wired for instant hanging. They are beautiful.

I feel really good about this show. The best seller so far is "Light Force", a powerful tree image that was digitally created in Corel Painter II. It can be ordered as a fine art giclee print in many different sizes.

Herb & Dorothy -- Wonderful Movie for Artists

Herb and Dorothy Vogel were the quintessential art collectors. I enjoyed this movie tremendously on many levels. From an artist standpoint, I wish I had more collectors like Herb and Dorothy out there interested in my work. If they liked an artist's work, they followed them, made friends with them, and collected their work over the years. This is a MUST SEE for every artist out there. I also think as artists, we could be better at collecting other artist's works. I rented the movie last night from Netflix in the Play Now mode.

On another level, they were married for over 40 years (maybe still are?). They are each other's best friend and love hanging out together and going to art events everyday.

Very extraordinary ordinary folks. You gotta love 'em!

Mata Ortiz, Mexico

I went to Mata Ortiz, Mexico last week over Spring Break with my clay class.
There were 12 of us all together. We took 2 short workshops on Monday.
It was my first time to visit Mata Ortiz. The story is amazing. Their
pots are amazing, too. Check out Mata Ortiz gallery online.

Photos:
Gray pots -- Student pots (ollas) just before they were fired. Three of us chose to do "black on black" pots -- they belong to: left to right: Dottie, Mary (me), Rosie. The potters in Mata Ortiz fire their pots right in their own yard! You can see a wire wheel underneath our pots. This was placed on top of a large flat, round metal piece. The pots were covered with a metal container, then sand was used to seal the edge. Wood was leaned against this container. Using lots of kerosene (cannot remember the actual lighter fluid they used) and a match, the fire was coaxed into being. The fire burned for 15-20 minutes. Then the pots were cooled down by brushing away the coals and sand. Eventually the lid was taken off and the pots were taken out and allowed to cool.

People: When you visit Mata Ortiz, you buy pots! You can buy pots at the place you stay as the potters in town are allowed to bring their pots in for view. Or you can go visit the potters in their homes / studios and purchase direct. Here, Rosie and I have purchased pots from the Ortiz family. Rosie's pot was a black on black she purchased from the father. He invented a technique of using graphite on the pot to create the black color. Rosie love the black on black look and wanted to buy from the person who invented this technique. I fell in love with the pot made by his son, Tati. The young potters are moving beyond the traditional colors of black and red. They are experimenting with chemically treated colors like blue, gray, and green which this pot sports. I love the oriental feeling of the design which is also non-traditional Mata Ortiz. The potters of Mata Ortiz are constantly innovating new shapes and techniques. My definition of art contains three elements:

1. Art is made by a human being.
2. Art is created to have an impact, to change someone else.
3. Art is a gift. You can sell the souvenir, the canvas, the recording... but the idea itself is free, and the generosity is a critical part of making art.

By my definition, most art has nothing to do with oil paint or marble. Art is what we we're doing when we do our best work.

5 Large Life Lessons of 2009

I keep hearing people complain about 2009. "Good riddance!" they shout.

I loved 2009. I loved it as much for its challenges as its successes. In fact, I believe that the tumults we've faced as a global community are forcing us all off auto-pilot and into a place of deeper Creativity.

As a creative entrepreneur, I had my share of power-packed lessons this year, and I am excited to continue learning from them! There's no need to live in fear. As Einstein said: "The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe."

Here are my 5 favorite lessons of 2009:

1 - Our Growth is Often Proportional to Our Investment.

This lesson is one of the gifts of owning your own business - though it sure doesn't seem like a gift at first!

The employee mindset goes like this: "Hey, when the company pays for it, I'll do it."

These past two years, I've invested more in my education and coaching than ever before. Yet again, I had to move past the "employee mindset" and plunk down my own moolah. Not only did I step up and play a bigger game, (When our cash is involved - we gotta show up, right?!) but my income skyrocketed.

2 - Clarity Trumps Practicality.

Last March, I had the idea of putting on a big event later in the year.

I said something like this to my coach: "I just don't know if this idea is practical, given the economy."

Sheri gave me that look that coaches give clients when the client has just stepped into the Land of Crappy Thinking. She said, "I don't care if it's practical. I care if you're clear that you want to do it."

I got clear. I did it. It was great. (Yes, even in this economy!)

Clarity trumps practicality. When someone is clear, and they take action from that place of clarity – then practicality has no choice but to move aside and let manifestation occur.

3 - Systems Are Sizzlin'.

I've always been great at "winging it." I'm creative. I'm intuitive. I take action.

The only problem when you're good at winging it is that you often live in chaos, and you tend to see everything on your to-do list as urgent. After a while, this leads to burn out.

Systems require that you step back and look at your daily activities with deep reflection. Systems require that you ask: "How does this work? How can we make it more effective?" Systems allow you to step away from your work, take vacations, have weekends – and most blessedly, have lots of free space in your mind for creativity to bloom.

4 - Ignoring your Business and Marketing Doesn't Make You Humble. (It makes you fail.)

I was a big fan of the statement: "Do what you love, and the money will follow." It's a beautiful philosophy. And true on so many levels.

But I used it as a way to ignore the business side of my work. After all, hey, if the money will follow - then I don't ever have to deal with it, right?

Uh, wrong.

I've since learned that avoidance is not a game plan. Neither is hope.

Even though I was busy in my business this year, I experienced a deeper peace than ever before because I understand how run my business and marketing. In the same way that Creativity and Songwriting taught me so much at the beginning of my career – facing my business and being brave enough to market my work has taken that learning to a higher level than I ever imagined.

5 - Serve. Or Be a Servant. The Choice is Yours.

You serve others with your attention, your intention, your health, your clarity, your awareness, and your power.

You serve others by charging what you're worth, taking care of your health, honoring your time so that you're not distracted or multi-tasking, by making requests rather than complaining, and by taking full responsibility for your thoughts and actions.

When you're a servant, however, you're a slave to the ego, which wants you to believe that serving others means ignoring yourself. After all, the ego would prefer that you remain powerless, fearful, and unaware. That way, it keeps you tethered to the idea of "security." When you don't understand power (or service), you need security for survival. The ego is great at security.

The difference may seem subtle. But the power of this lesson has been staggering.

New Painting -- Spirit House

Spirit House, 24" x 24", mixed-media on wood

I just finished this painting a couple of weeks ago. It is a thrilling painting for me as it is very different than anything I have done to date.

A friend gave me the aspen leaves that inspired the whole thing. I added found objects that have been with me for years: stones, wood, metal, and feathers. The spirit house in the right top corner began as a double photocopy of a previous painting. The circular texture is made by pressing an empty masking tape roll into acrylic medium.

A "Goddess" tree gifted me with the spirit house floor and roof pieces of wood. Anyone out there in Silver City, New Mexico might know this tree. She sits behind the turquoise benches on Boston Hill.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this painting.

I recently visited Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico. This is my expression of the magic I felt in the land and ancient sites.

The scene shown here is what I saw from my campsite. An amazing cloud formation surprised us on one day with pink, blue, and green colors.

I had never heard of this term before so I had to click on its meaning:

Here's the short of it from About.com:

A vanitas painting, while possibly containing lovely objects, always included some reference to man's mortality - most often a human skull (with or without other bones), but also by way of burning candles, soap bubbles or decaying flowers. It was meant not only to be a work of art, but also to carry an important moral message: Trivial pleasures of life are abruptly and permanently wiped out by death, so don't get too carried away during your earthly time, Bub.

Should Artists Lower Their Price in this Market?

Pricing is always an issue for artists. In times like these, it is tempting to lower prices in hopes that we will sell our work more easily. These two articles talk specifically about Free; however, they have sparked my thoughts on pricing and how not to "sell out" our integrity. What do you think? Are you lowering your prices? Are you giving stuff away for free? Or are you finding ways to add value? I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
